Dear Students,
Welcome to the course Intercultural Seminar. In this course we will study the connections between culture and language and explore how culture influences what we are and what we do. To be able to do this we shall first have to know what culture is, what it is composed of and which elements go into what we call a culture. This will lead us to understand cultural differences and cultural values, beliefs and norms in various national cultures. This knowledge can help you in your future careers as translators and interpreters. The course content is exciting and you should be looking forward to the study in the course.
How to study
Culture is a phenomenon that have been studied in the past decades as many aspects of our lives have got globalized and taken intercultural dimensions. The main publications for your individual study are available in the university library and the KAA department library. Another source are the online databases that are available through the university library. I will explain you the use of them in our second session. Use also the internet resources to gain the new knowledge to be able to participate actively in discussions and orientate yourself in the multicultural world.
Requirements
The course is designed as a seminar with students´ active participation. Some lectures will be delivered by the teacher as an introduction to the topic and you will be required to participate actively in answering and raising questions, reacting to contemporary social events and answering some linguistic questions. At the end of the course you should be able to express your views and give arguments. For each seminar you are required to study the reading passages, make notes and prepare for a presentation or discussion in class. As we only have two contact seminars (16 teaching units), the core of your study load will be individual study. 10 hours are allotted for the individual study of new topics (they will be given to you in the second session) and for the preparation of your assignments.

As you are external students, the core of the assessment will be based on the final test (written and oral) where you can gain 60 % of the final mark. The continuous assessment (40 %) will be based on your written assignments which you will be required to submit during the semester. For the submission will shall use the LMS.
